A Tragic Toilet Experience in The Most Beautiful Location in Patagonia

Learning the hard way why you should always check before you go

It's always a dreaded feeling at a bar — the moment you can feel a number two, and it won't go away. I waited, hoping it would pass. Scanning the bar, I noticed there was one solitary toilet that fed straight back into the bar. My moment of need couldn't have happened at a worse moment.

I was in a grimy rock bar in Bariloche — a town in the northeast of Patagonia that is jaw-droppingly beautiful.

With views of Nahuel Huapi Lake and the surrounding snow-capped mountains, not to mention the decadent, mouthwatering chocolate on every street corner, it's earned its reputation as the 'Little Switzerland' in Patagonia. My only sour moment in an otherwise joyous experience was that time in the bar.

The longer I waited, the more pressure built up. I began shuffling from one foot to the other while trying desperately to stop thinking about the thing I couldn't stop thinking about, hoping it would float away, to be dealt with later.

It didn't.
